I came across Mel Bartholemew's breakthrough book over
20 year ago. It was a simple and very clearly written book
about how to maximize the output in small space
gardening.
Mel wrote about how people in the city could produce a
whole lot of vegetables in a very small space by putting
each plant in a single square foot. So, in a 4 foot x 4 foot
square you could be growing sixteen plants at a time. I
realized that it would be easy to put a 4' square even on an
apartment balcony. Maybe two!
Mel's idea made a lot of sense to me because I was always
letting my garden go around July 1st. Before I could sneeze
the garden was filled with an incredible number of leaves by
that date. I would throw my hands up and go swimming instead
of doing the much needed weeding.
